. Name of the authors : Dr Ulka Natu, Mrs. Neela Tamhane, Shaila Bhate, kanchan Samel, Ghantali Mitra Mandal, Thane, Maharashtra, India, 400602. |
Background :
PCOD is a complex endocrinopathy with tremendous increase in incidence associated with infrequent ovulation, androgen excess with disturbed LH/FSH ratios, abnormal carbohydrate metabolism, (insulin resistance) also in disturbed lipid profile resulting in an unfavorable picture. |
Method :
A study was conducted on 32 subfertility women with proved PCOD either by USG or clinically to prove effect of yogic practices during April 08 to June 08. There was a drop out of 15, leaving a study group of total 17 girls.
Practices were conducted daily for 1 ½ hrs for 12 weeks which included few dynamic loosening practices initially followed by asanas, suryanamaskars, shuddikriyas, pranayama, mantrayoga, naadyoga, dharna and dhyan. |
Results :
An automatic correction of life style with change in food habits along with yogic practices resulted in significant improvement in number of follicles after ovulation induction, decreased serum Triglyceride levels, decrease in LH/FSH ratio, decreased Se insulin levels along with a rise in Se SHGB levels, improvement in psychological depression scores.
Five women conceived within 6 months of beginning of yogic practices, with a loss of embryo in 3, and full term pregnancies in two of them. |
Conclusion :
A lot of new invasive options like laparoscopic PCO drilling are undertaken to treat patients with PCOS for infertility. But PCOS is an excellent example where implementing holistic yogic intervention can be definitely thought of as it is move physiologic ,non-invasive, non pharmacologic, and without any side effects. |
